Plumber Licensing

For the safety of New Hampshire residents, the state regulates a number of occupations, including attorneys, nurses, pharmacists, electricians and plumbers. Requirements vary, but typically the practitioner must be Licensed, Certified or Registered.

The state defines the term license as follows: “Licensing is generally used to describe the most restrictive method of regulation, requiring any person earning a living in the occupation to obtain permission from a government agency designated by law. To qualify for a license, applicants usually must meet requirements including completing an approved educational program, attaining a specific amount of work-related experience, pass an examination, have reached a specific age, provide proof of professional character, and pay a fee.”

Plumbers have two levels of licenses: journeyman and master plumber. These licenses reflect the level of expertise of the practitioner. Prior to becoming a licensed plumber, a person must first serve as an apprentice.

Apprentice Plumber

Prior to becoming a journeyman plumber, one must serve as an apprentice under the direct supervision of a master or journeyman plumber. An apprenticeship gives on-the-job training, and requires about four years, or 8,000 hours, to complete. An additional 150 hours of related classroom instruction is required each year as well. An identification card issued by the Plumbers’ Licensing board must be carried by apprentice plumbers. Records of the work and classroom hours must be kept and submitted prior to taking the journeyman’s examination.

Licensed Journeyman Plumber

After completion of an approved four-year apprenticeship and educational requirements, the aspiring plumber may take the journeyman plumbing examination. After passing the exam, he or she can then apply to the New Hampshire Plumber’s Licensing Board to receive a Journeyman Plumber license.

Licensed Master Plumber

After working at least six months as a Journeyman Plumber, you may sit for the Master Plumber exam. This exam consists of at least 100 questions, and a passing grade is 75% or better.

Gas Fitters License

To legally install, repair, service or remove any appliances or apparatus that requires natural gas or propane, the State of New Hampshire requires a Gas Fitters License. As with plumbing licenses, for an individual to qualify for a license, they must first complete the required education, have a specific amount of on-the-job training, and pass an exam.
